Legal expert Ali Al-Tamimi explained the legal ways through which the government of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani can recover smuggled and looted funds outside the country.
"The best international move to recover the money smuggled abroad, which is estimated at 500 billion US dollars, is through the money laundering agreement of 2003, signed by Iraq in 2007 with the help of these countries, as well as in accordance with the Baghdad-Washington agreement in accordance with Article 28 of the 2008 agreement," Al-Tamimi told Al-maalouma. He added that
"Iraq has the right to recover its funds in accordance with Article 50 of the UN Charter, which confirms the right of countries fighting organizations placed under Chapter VII of the UN Charter to request the assistance of the United Nations and Iraq was fighting the terrorist ISIS placed under Chapter VII under resolution 2170 of 2014". He pointed out that
"some countries, including the mentioned ones, have a lot of smuggled funds and are also wanted for the judiciary, and
they can help Iraq recover its smuggled funds, as
the US Federal Bank contains 65 billion frozen dollars belonging to the former regime and Iraq can claim them, according to the above agreement for 2008". Ended 25N
