BAGHDAD, Jan. 24 (AKnews) - A "food basket" system of distributing rations in a single package has been scrapped because the packaging process would cost $850 million USD (991 billion IQD) on top off the $6 billion USD (6.9 trillion IQD) rationing system budget.
From the beginning of the 1991 international embargo many Iraqis have depended on their food ration.
Finance Committee member Abdul-Hussein Abtan told AKnews his committee intends to improve the quality of the five items citizens are given for their ration card. These are flour, rice, cooking oil, and baby milk.
For the last year however citizens have complained that they do not receive all the items together, only in piecemeal. The "food basket" concept was meant to rectify this.
