Premier Nouri al-Maliki said today that "the situation in the region and the nature of internal and external threats necessitate more cooperation and coordination against sectarianism," calling on the Islamic Conference Organization (ICO) to play a greater role in unifying Muslims.
In a statement issued by his office, following a meeting with Islamic Organization delegation headed by Mr Mehdi Fathullah. Maliki expressed Iraq's readiness to cooperate with the organization to unify Muslims and exclude sectarianism.
On the other side, the delegation handed a letter to Premier Maliki from the Secretary General of the Islamic Organization, stating that Iraq is competent to lead an initiative to enhance unity among Muslims.
