UN should play greater role - al-Iraqiya

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Al-Iraqiya's spokeswoman today called on the United Nations to play a greater role, expressing astonishment for the weak and limited UN representation in country that needs its expertise in building a new state.
Spokeswoman Maysoon al-Damalouji told Aswat al-Iraq that "the UN representation in Iraq is weak, if not completly absent, because Iraq needs active UN representation in building the governmental institutions, education, women rights, legislations, and human rights."
She pointed out that the role of UN representative Ed Melkert was important, because he was fully understanding of the role of Iraq, and showed real courage when speaking on eradicating illiteracy among women, as well his vital role in the late elections.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon was reported his intention to appoint the German Martin Kobler head of the UN delegation in Iraq to replace Ed Melkert, who worked in Iraq since July, 2009.
The UN site reported that Kobler was appointed a special representative and head of the UNAMI in Iraq.
Kobler worked as deputy of the UN special representative for political affairs in Afghanistan, as well as in the German ministry of foreign affairs for 25 years, and was the UN's election supervisor in Haiti, Nicaragua and Cambodia.
