Amman - A ministry of Agriculture team travels to Iraq in the next two days to discuss prospects for opening the Iraqi market to Jordanian farm produce as regional turmoil brought exports to a virtual standstill and glutted the local market, Minister of Agriculture Ahmad Al Khattab said.
The political upheaval in the region has a direct impact on the Kingdom's economy, with the agriculture sector hardest hit as exports to neighbouring Arab countries had been severely curtailed, glutting the local market and sending vegetable prices plunging to record levels this season. It also triggered appeals by farmers for the government to intervene and solve the marketing dilemma.
Khattab told Petra today that the delegation would hold talks with Iraqi authorities for exports to start, particularly tomato, expressing hope that those efforts would help to find a new conduit for products and solve the marketing problem "in view of the prevailing political circumstances in the region."
