DAMASCUS, March 12 (AKnews) - A delegation from the Kurdish National Council yesterday met Li Huaxin, envoy of the Chinese foreign minister, to discuss China's initiative to resolve the Syrian crisis.
The meeting in Damascus was held at the invitation of the Chinese embassy.
Nasr al-Din Ibrahim, secretary of the Kurdish Democratic Party in Syria and member of the Office of the Secretariat of the Syrian National Council, said the delegation received a copy of the Chinese initiative to resolve the crisis in Syria.
The initiative includes six articles. The most important is the call for all forms of violence to stop immediately, the start of a national dialogue between parties, and efforts to facilitate humanitarian relief operations in Syria. The initiative does not include the removal of President Assad as a condition.
Huaxin informed the delegation that he had met the Syrian foreign minister Walid al-Moallem and told him about China's position, which is that the crisis should be resolved through peaceful political means. Huaxin said China wants the violence to stop immediately and he assured the delegation that the Chinese government will continue its efforts to end the crisis in the country.
Ibrahim said: "The executive body of the Kurdish National Council met yesterday to discuss the Chinese initiative and agreed to welcome it but this is not enough. Accepting the initiative seriously is needed.
"The National Kurdish Council didn't meet the Chinese envoy with the Syrian Coordination Committee but it entered in conjunction with the Building the Syrian State Movement, headed by opposition Louay Hussein.
"They [the Syrian State Building Movement] informed the Chinese envoy that the success of these efforts depends on the steps taken by the power to prove the sincerity of its demands after it promised more than once about accepting initiatives without fulfilling its obligations," he continued.
"The first thing expected to be done by the [Syrian] power in the case of acceptance is to release all detainees arrested during the peaceful protest."
Ibrahim said the two delegations agreed that the solution by the Syrian parties to end the crisis must be political and peaceful to push the country towards a democratic state.
He added that a committee of independent international mediators and non-governmental parties need to work with Kofi Annan, the UN-Arab League special envoy on Syria, to mediate between the ruling power and opposition parties, as well as armed factions, to stop the violence.
Ibrahim said the Kurdish delegation defined the Kurdish National Council's national objectives and explained briefly the situation of the Kurdish people and the view of Kurdish people to resolve the crisis in Syria.
According to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights the death toll of civilians and military personnel since the start of the Syrian uprising in mid-March last year has now reached 7,673 people.
