Iran and Iraq have underlined the significance of the ‘great potentials’ of bilateral ties, which could be used to boost cooperation and enhance the volume of economic exchanges.
“Economic exchanges [between Iran and Iraq] indicate enhanced relations. The two countries should pay more attention to their great potentials,” said Iran's Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Shamseddin Hosseini in a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Rafi Hiyad al-Issawi in Tehran on Thursday.
He expressed hope that the visit by the Iraqi side would lead to the improvement of economic cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad.
Al-Issawi, for his part, said Iraq shoulders a heavy responsibility to expand economic and financial relations with Iran after the withdrawal of US forces from the war-weary country.
The two neighboring countries currently enjoy the best of relations, thanks to the political will of their governments, he added.
At the end of the meeting, Hosseini and al-Issawi signed agreements to bolster economic cooperation, including one to avoid double taxation.
After the conclusion of the agreements, the Iraqi minister reiterated his country’s readiness to boost economic ties with Iran.
He added that the agreement on scrapping the double taxation shows Iraq’s determination to enhance economic relations with Iran.
Al-Issawi also noted that Tehran and Baghdad will sign more agreements in the fields of customs and investment in the near future.
