BAGHDAD, May 5 (AKnews) - The Kurdish Blocs Coalition (KBC) stated today that the federal government derives its legitimacy from the Erbil political agreements that were the basis of its formation, warning that ignoring the agreements will not save the political process.
Coalition spokesman Muayyid Tayyeb said the current government was formed based on the Erbil agreements, particularly the Erbil convention and the principles of balance and partnership.
"The lack of commitment to the political agreements and the principles of balance and partnership will not save the political process from the current crisis. All the parties must attend the national conference that President Jalal Talabani called for and with the absence of any party we will not achieve the success of the conference."
The political process in Iraq has been in a state of dilemma for several months now. A week ago Kurdistan President Massoud Barzani and his Iraqi counterpart Jalal Talabani met with Iraqiya List leaders Ayad Allawi and Osama al-Nujaifi as well as Sadrist Movement leader Muqtada Sadr in Erbil to discuss a solution to the crisis.
The leaders gave a letter outlining their decisions to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. The letter stressed the importance of holding the national conference and the commitment to enforcing the unimplemented articles of the Erbil agreement within 15 days.
Iraqiya List has refused to attend the national conference unless its five demands are implemented, some of which relate to the Erbil agreements.
Iraqiya says it is awaiting the return of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, who is currently in Kurdistan Region, to decide whether it will attend the conference or not.
