Iraq: a thousand soldiers deserting

A thousand Kurdish soldiers have defected from the Iraqi army and want to join the forces of the autonomous region of Kurdistan, a blow to the central government. This decision was taken after a dispute with the command of the army, two Kurdish officials said today. The soldiers, members of the 16th Brigade of the army, had refused in April to participate in an operation that had ordered the government dominated by Shiites against a city sunnite.Depuis majority, they do not cash their salaries and receive more of army rations. Military 1070 could be incorporated into peshmerga, the Kurdish fighters, but opinions differ on Kurdish leaders progress of this integration. Shallal Abdul Mayor Touz Khourmatou, said soldiers now perceived wages and rations from the peshmerga, while Halkurd Mullah Ali, the spokesman of the Ministry of Peshmerga, speaks only of rations.
"If we do not find an agreement with Baghdad about these soldiers, we are ready to integrate the peshmerga," said Mullah Ali Halkurd. Kurdish brigade commander and two battalion commanders, also Kurdish, were replaced by Arab officers, according to the mayor of Tuz Khourmatou and spokesman peshmerga.
