Italian NGO Promotes National Park Initiative

Minister Falah Mustafa received a delegation from Ev-K2-CNR, an Italian non-government organisation promoting studies in high-altitude disciplines, including environmental sciences, earth sciences and technological research, who were accompanied by the Head of Italian Consular Office in Erbil, Dr Simone De Santi.
The team has visited the Kurdistan Region five times aimed at the creation of a national park in Rawanduz.
Speaking about the importance of these efforts, Minister Mustafa said that the KRG is committed to the well-being of the environment and preserving the region’s heritage. He said, “This will raise awareness in the communities and promote a sense of partnership between the locals and the government.” He also spoke about the need to promote more understanding in social responsibility.

He said, “This initiative involves considerations about the environment, natural resources and the human factor – the people living in the areas.” He added that the communities have already expressed significant interest.
Dr De Santi also spoke about the importance of a national park in Kurdistan to promote the tourism industry, saying it would create lasting impressions for tourists and visitors alike.
Both sides agreed that this initiative would help attract awareness and understanding from the region’s universities and communities, and it would encourage research disciplines in climate change and environmental studies.
The organisation has several projects in other countries, including Uganda, Nepal, Pakistan, France, Italy and Chile. These projects are implemented and coordinated with prestigious universities and UN agencies, including UNEP and UNDP, as well as with the European Union.
A committee has been setup to hold discussions with the relevant stakeholders. During their three-day visit, they will meet with various other officials and organisations to finalise their agreement.
