Iraqi VP to Face Trial in Absentia
Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi would be put on trial in absentia after he refused to return to Baghdad to stand trial, an Iraqi lawmaker says.
The parliamentarian for a coalition of State Law, Hussein al-Asadi, said the Supreme Judicial Council in a letter to the Ministry of Finance ordered confiscation of Hashemi’s all properties, adding that the order will prepare the ground for the trial of Hashemi in absentia.
He added that Hashemi would be tried in absentia according to Article 121 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of 1971, Iraqi media reported.
Iraq‘s Interior Ministry has issued an arrest warrant for the vice president, who was accused of involving in terrorist activities and the assassination of Iraqi officials.
Hashemi, who has fled to the autonomous Kurdish region north of the country, denied the charges and said that he is “ready to face trial” in Kurdistan.
Spokesman of Baghdad Operations Command (BOC) Major General Qasim Ata dismissed Hashemi’s request.
“Baghdad is the capital of Iraq and Mr. Hashemi also should be tried in a Baghdad court and not in a court in Kurdistan because a Baghdadi court issued his arrest warrant,” he said.
Hashemi’s bodyguards have confessed that they had assassinated several Iraqi officials and army generals over the past years on his order.
The bodyguards said a number of army generals, military officials, policemen, a health ministry official and a foreign ministry official were among the victims, adding that they received USD 3,000 for each mission.
The arrest warrant for Hashemi was issued under the anti-terror laws.
