BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi will be tried in absentia if he does not turn himself in to the Iraqi judicial system in Baghdad, a legal expert said on Monday.
“Al-Hashemi has to come to Baghdad and defend himself regarding the accusations made against him,” Tareq Harb told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
“This is the third lawsuit filed against him and should be published on the local newspapers, according to the law, as he is a fugitive,” he added, pointing out that the court should set a date for his trial.
State-run al-Iraqiya satellite channel said yesterday that the Supreme Judicial Council had referred the papers of al-Hashemi and his brother in law to the Central Criminal Court after completing investigation in three cases.
