Iraq’s Parliament Speaker discusses fate of lost Iraqi funds with U.S. State Secretary
BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraq’s Parliament Speaker, Usama al-Nujeify, now on a visited to the United States, has discussed with U.S.
State Secretary, Hilary Clinton, the fate of the Iraqi funds, estimated at US$17 billions (b), dismissed from Iraq’s Development Fund, Nujeify’s office reported on Saturday.
“The said issue represents a great harm to the young democracy in Iraq and reflects the current corruption, digging in the body of the Iraqi State,” Nujeify’s office reported him as saying.
It quoted Nujeify as saying: “it is necessary that the U.S.
Administration pay more attention to the said issue,” and quoting Clinton as having expressed her “deep sorrow, considering the said issue as a black spot in the body of democracy and a treason towards both Iraqi and American peoples.”
“Clinton had expressed complete readiness and support to uncover the complications of the issue, in order to uncover the fact before the public opinion and to account those behind it,” the statement pointed out.
The statement, meanwhile stressed that both sides have discussed the current political and security situation in Iraq, expressing “fear that the current challenges of the democratic move in Iraq would be reflected negatively on the activity of the State of Iraq.”
Nujeify, on his part, had on the International Community to exert further cooperation with the Iraqi people, to help them surpass the current transformation phase, after having passed the first phase.
Clinton, the statement reported, “had highly assessed the role of the Iraqi Parliament to protect the democratic system in Iraq and to support the power of the people, in order to help Baghdad restore its historic and humanitarian role.”
