The Iraqi Prime Minister is expected to sign a major arms agreement with Russia. Nuri al-Maliki has already made clear his three day visit to Moscow is aimed at strengthening military and energy ties.
He is also travelling with Iraq’s oil and trade minister – two officials in a perfect position to approve new investments from Russia’s state energy holdings.
It is thought a four-billion euro deal to supply Iraq with arms would make Russia the second biggest supplier after the United States.
The two sides are also expected to use the signing to put on a common front over Syria, with both Baghdad and Moscow firmly against any foreign military intervention.
